Meditation Myths – Part 2

Listen To Your Inner Self.

As mentioned before there are many benefits to meditation but there are also many myths.

Online encyclopedia Wikipedia lists the following entry for the term meditation:

Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

I am in complete agreement with the stated definition/explanation of meditation. With that being said, at this point I would like to insert a passage from my book, 'Mr. & Mrs. Know It All, Guess What You Don’t Know Shit, An Insight Into The Universe':

No matter what we learn, think, feel, or believe everything we need to know about who we are and what we are doing here can be found internally. Rarely if ever do we need to consult any outside entities to learn whom we are or how to connect with our inner being. Finding inspiration from external sources is acceptable but should only be reinforcement to what we already innately know or feel. The process is about getting back in touch with our core self, and we should always confer with what we think or feel above all else (P.76).

Basically, what that means is that it is okay to do research on how to meditate and elevate our minds but do not disregard what feels right or natural to your innate being. There was a humorous article published in The New Yorker that gave reference to the Wrong Ways to Meditate. At first, I was put off then instantaneously I got the sarcasm. No way is the wrong way if how you do it brings you peace.

Despite all the good things that are said about the practice of meditation, it will not make all your problems go away.

For sure there is a therapeutic efficacy that comes with meditation, but it does not alleviate worldly or personal problems. Life will still be challenging; however, the number one result of meditation is a calm and peaceful reaction to life. We gain the ability to deal with problems from a more practical and elevated state of mind. Meditation has the propensity to take you from a state of being reactive to one of imperviousness. You very quickly come to see that problems don’t disappear they just no longer affect you in a way that compromises your peace.

When you meditate you automatically acquire magic powers.

When you enter into a deep meditative state regularly and consistently you start to experience things that you otherwise normally would not. In our normal state of being we can and do sometimes experience weird things that are hard to explain or even rationalize and we describe those occurrences as dejavu, or even more relatable, coincidence. As someone who has been practicing meditation for almost 4 years, I experience fortuities all the time. I did just now write this passage. As I sat contemplating how to explain coincidence, I found myself in trance trying to relay the message I wanted. What snapped me out of the trance is the television noise in the background repetitively saying the word coincidence. I just smiled to myself because that type of occurrence is affirmation of the something I'm considering.

Meditation is a powerful tool to tap into our inner being and the power that exists at our core. We use that power to manifest whatever we want. Magic can happen, but it does not happen by chance. It is a subtle process of putting clear and focused intentions into the universe and detaching ourselves from the outcome only to focus on our perceived feelings of having that which we desire.

Meditation is witch or devil worshiping and can trap you in-between worlds.

This myth is both false and true. It can be used as a means for witchcraft or devil worshiping and there is the potential to trap you between worlds. ONLY if that is your intent. If you are a person who practices witchcraft or worships the devil, then meditation will take you deeper into that realm. If you are a spiritual or religious person who worships God then it will take you deeper into that realm as well. Meditation is subjectively used as a catalyst to heighten our inner most personal feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. For those more neutral in their belief systems, meditation can be used as a guide to daily decision making.

Now I’m going to be brutally honest and truthful with a scare I had one time I was in meditation. I always seek to experience higher out of body experiences. I am enamored with this multi-dimensional existence we are having. I do set intentions to have these experiences. When it finally happened for the first time, I was not ready or prepared and it scared the hell out of me. For approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute, I was stuck in-between worlds. What I mean by worlds is this physical one that we live in and experience with our five senses, also known as earth. The other side of that is the nonphysical that we cannot experience with our senses. I was cognizant of the simultaneous existence, but I couldn’t snap out of it and begin to panic. Immediately I put into practice what I was learning in meditation, and that is, what we resist will persist. I accepted the state of transition I was in and was able to go back to the existence I wanted.

Meditation is the end all be all to elevated wisdom and to unlocking the mysteries of our inner being.

What is meditation and how to do it will garner different responses depending on who you ask. The basic understanding of mediation for most is that if you sit quietly blocking out the noise in your surroundings the end result is calmness. Some people lack the temperament to sit still and block out what is happening around them. It’s not that they lack the concentration to do so it’s just that innately some people are always wound up no matter what they do to try and relax, it's called a personality. For those people concentration and relaxation is difficult to achieve. Most often this is a biological disposition and can be changed with lots of practice. To that end it is imperative to consider meditation as a tool to bring you peace and what brings us peace varies from person to person.

Meditation does not have to be this deep trance like state. Mediation can be anything we do that brings us a complete sense of peace. Once that peace is achieved, we enter into a transcendent state of being were at the core there is balance and love. During this peaceful state of being clarity is achieved. Clarity helps us to bring so many things into perspective that allow us to set clearer intentions for moving about in this physical world. That is it. If listening to music takes you to your ultimate place of peace that is your form of meditation. If painting, singing, or dancing brings you to your ultimate place of peace then that is your way of meditating. If sunbathing brings you to your ultimate place of peace, consider that your form or meditation. Imperative is that you consciously and mindfully acknowledge that you are at your ultimate level of peace. Once you make the acknowledgement than you can feel, not think, your way to where you want to go in life. Allow your state of being (that feeling of peace and love) to dictate your thoughts. Pay attention to your thoughts in these moments because they are originating from a higher form of self. Our higher selves will always guide us to decisions that serve our highest and greatest good in all facets of life and humanity.

Sometimes all you have is all you need. E.Lynn
