Growing A Small Home Garden Is Easier Than You Think

Writer: E. LynnE. Lynn

In my quarantine angst and boredom, I decided to try my hand at sustaining my own herb garden. To be totally transparent I did not grow from seeds. I purchased the pre-potted herbs from the grocery story, Lidl and Publix have the best selections. I purchased all the different ones they had to start my garden. Purchase price start at roughly $2.99 for each potted plant.

Okay so my living quarters are very small and all I am working with for my garden is a screened-in patio which is all I need. I set my plants up on a portable table, read the instructions for maintenance, and let them live. I was happy to see that they were pretty much self-sustainable with me only adding tap water when the topsoil dried out. Watering amounts to maybe every other day. You don't pour the water directly in the pot you pour it in the drip pan and the plant sucks it up from the roots.

Watering Tip: Avoid watering plants with water taken immediately from the faucet. Fill the watering container with tap water and let it sit for at least 24 hours allowing the chlorine and fluoride to dissipate.

I've had the garden for about 4 months, and they've held up pretty well even with my neglectful ways. The plants hold up way better and much longer than the fresh herbs from the veggie cooler that almost always spoil in the crisper. My herb plants have grown beyond what the current small pot can handle but I have no intention of repotting just yet. I tell you having an herb garden at your disposal is very rewarding. When I am cooking the feeling of plucking herbs from my own garden is priceless. And the smells and tastes are amazing.
